At the beginning of lockdown HMRC paused their enquiry activities but they have now started to ramp these up again as they will be under pressure to collect as much tax as possible to help to reduce the Government’s large Coronavirus support fund package borrowings.
They have started with easy targets, for example, taxpayers who may be liable to pay the High Income Child Benefit charge.
In addition, HMRC have already signalled their intention to scrutinise furlough claims and self employment support grants as there is a suspicion that a lot of fraudulent claims have been made.
Unfortunately, we therefore expect to be hearing a lot more from HMRC over the coming months.
We will be contacting clients, who have not already subscribed to our tax investigation service in the coming weeks asking them to reconsider this to ensure that they are protected as much as possible from any HMRC enquiries.
In the meantime if you would like more information about this service please contact Ann McQueen.
