Tax protection fee – An investment or a gamble?

7th November 2016 | Posted in: Company News

The tax protection regime is now an annual exercise for Accountants and is actually advised as ‘good practice’ by the Accounting Institutes to offer the service to our clients. It is no secret that HMRC are increasing the number of enquiries that are being opened to increase the ‘tax take’.

For a fee ranging up to £300, you can protect yourself or your company from the accountancy fees that will be due from the communications, information gathering and possibly meeting HMRC inspectors. Typically £300 would not cover the first reply request for information. We have examples where enquiries have lasted years and no tax has been due but the accountancy fees are several thousand pounds. The tax protection fee would mean that a third party pays these fees.

The tax protection fee however covers more than dealing with tax enquiries. It also covers:

• Routine VAT or PAYE inspections – we can have a member of our staff attending throughout the day dealing with HMRC to answer queries leaving you to get on with your work.

• Access to a business legal helpline including assistance with employment law or Health & Safety issues.

• Access to a tax & vat helpline to give a view on more complex issues.

If you would like to know about what to do about an HMRC tax enquiry in Scotland or any aspect of this please contact Angie Harvey on 0131 317 7377 or angie.harvey@jsca.co.uk and she will ensure you are connected with the most relevant member of the team.

If you feel we could help you and would like to discuss any of the above, please contact David Miller CA on 0131 317 7377 or email to david.miller@jsca.co.uk.
