Our Tax Investigation Service Has Been Expanded
We recently wrote to our clients regarding the tax investigation and enquiry service that we offer. This is designed to cover our fees in the event of an HMRC enquiry or investigation into VAT, PAYE, Income tax and Corporation tax. This year we have extended the service to deal with enquiries into Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) claims and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) claims, as we are already starting to see HMRC querying these.
HMRC can open an enquiry or investigate any business or taxpayer, no matter how much care you or we as your accountants take with your affairs. The whole process can be very time consuming and intrusive and costly, even if at the end of the day HMRC do not find anything amiss or any underpaid tax/grants to recover.
After a pause over the last year due the Coronavirus Pandemic, HMRC have recently stepped up their enquiry activities. They will be under pressure to recover as much tax as they can with a view to reducing government borrowing which is currently at record levels. This increase in activity is not likely to decrease in the future as HMRC were given additional funding to enable them to undertake more enquires in the last UK Budget.
We would therefore urge all of our clients to carefully consider subscribing to the tax investigation and enquiry service that we offer. The service also gives business clients access to round the clock employment, health and safety and legal advice as well as the Markel Legal Hub.
