Moving back to a small accounting practice
I joined Johnston Smillie in September last year, after spending a year and a half in an audit department of a larger practice. This move required certain adjustment and brought interesting challenges in my daily routines.
A few thoughts that come to mind:
- We forget technical details in areas we don’t deal with on regular basis much quicker than we expect! Not dealing with VAT or CT61 returns for over a year required a technical refresher of common issues and deadlines. The upside is all that knowledge also comes back quicker than we think!
- Getting to know everyone in the office within the first month was a great experience. It’s great to be a part of a small, closely working team.
- In a small accounting practice you provide advice to clients on variety of matters and you deal with them directly. This really gives a feeling of making a difference and helping the clients not only with compliance but also to develop their businesses.
- A smaller office can often be more flexible with working arrangements which allows for a better work life balance. Now I regularly have time to run over lunch break, which will come very handy when I start training for my 24hr fundraising race in June 2020.
- My own desk is also a bonus (apologies to all hot-desk enthusiasts!) – I love the fact that I have space for Bertie the Bee and my little cactus!
