Everyone’s first full-time job is a memorable one, hopefully for good reasons!

This has so far been the case for me here at Johnston Smillie. I graduated from Stirling University in May 2019 with a degree in Accountancy and Finance. I’ve now, 3 months in, had my first taste of full-time working life.

I had a part-time job throughout most of University, however my commitment’s as part of the University’s International Golf Scholarship program meant I was never able to obtain any experience working in the accounting industry.  I was lucky enough to travel to many different parts of the world playing golf which was a fantastic experience.

My time at University was brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone considering it. The Accountancy and Finance degree gives you a good knowledge of the basics and core concepts of the industry.  You also get the chance to develop your personal skills such as communication and teamwork which are incredibly important.

However, I’ve been asked many times if full time work in an accounting firm is what I expected… in truth I had no idea!

If there is anyone at university preparing to make the move into full time work, there are a few main differences.

  • Time management- You need to be able to structure your working day in the most efficient way to get tasks done in a suitable order. Especially if (like me) you’re working in a tax department approaching January.
  • Ask Questions- Here at Johnston Smillie I have been encouraged to ask questions from the start. You may feel you should know what to do, and therefore not want to ask for help but if you’re in doubt ask the question. It’ll mean you’ll get it right and you will know for the future.
  • Teamwork- Many University students (I was guilty sometimes) complain when they’ve to do group work. I’ve realised how important being able to work in a team is.  So, if you’ve got an upcoming group task to complete, give 100% and learn what you’re good at or not so good at when working in a team!
  • Finally, the hardest change… get used to a 6.15am alarm!
