The coronavirus outbreak has affected all of us and many of the points mentioned in our guidance for clients will apply to charities in much the same way as they apply to commercial organisations. Some charities will find that the importance of their contribution to society is heightened during the current crisis. Whatever the situation, the message remains the same: we all need to work together to get through this.
Administrative issues
Routine administrative matters will not be top priority at the moment, but these should not be neglected. OSCR have published some very helpful guidance which is recommended reading and which will be updated as the situation develops. The message given by OSCR with regard to their regulatory function is that their approach will be “understanding and proportionate”.
For charities registered in England and Wales, and for cross-border charities, the Charity Commission has issued separate guidance. They say that their approach will be “flexible and supportive”.
For charities which are companies limited by guarantee, or for those with incorporated trading subsidiaries, the guidance from Companies House also applies
The message from all three regulatory authorities is that if you are going to have difficulty complying with your filing obligations you should contact them as soon as possible.
The situation is changing on a daily basis and we shall keep track of events as they unfold and do whatever we can to help our clients during these difficult times. Most important of all, we shall do our very best to take care of ourselves, our family and friends, neighbours and colleagues.
