The SME Loan Scheme in Scotland is still open for applications.

This scheme, which is backed by the Scottish Government, provides unsecured, interest free loans of up to £100k for energy saving measures to eligible businesses in Scotland.

Who is eligible?

The scheme is open to:

  • Businesses which fall within the EU definition of small and medium sized enterprise (SME)
  • Charities and not for profit organisations

Applicants must be based in Scotland, must have been trading for at least 12 months, must be able to supply at least one set of annual accounts if requested and must pass a credit check.

What kinds of support are available?

The scheme offers loans of up to £100,000 towards the installation of energy saving measures.

Loans are unsecured and interest free, with a repayment term of 8 years.

A cashback grant of up to £20,000 may be available for certain types of equipment.

What measures are eligible for funding?

A wide range of energy saving measures are eligible for funding under the scheme.  Types of expenditure which may be eligible for funding include:

  • Heating and air conditioning systems
  • Adaptations to buildings (for example, insulation and double glazing)
  • Renewable energy technologies (such as wind turbines or solar PV systems)
  • Equipment to improve the efficiency of existing installations

Applications must be supported by a report from Zero Waste Scotland:
